Fascinated by storytelling, the singer and composer Marie-Flo Burki places poetry and narrative at the center of her work. Her vocal explorations evolve between folk, jazz, and free forms of improvisation.
Marie-Flo began her vocal studies at the Jazz Campus in Basel with Lisette Spinnler. She fell in love with the art of writing music following lessons with Guillermo Klein and went on to study composition at the University of Arts in Bern. Mentored by Efrat Alony, she is currently perfecting her vocal and performance skills. She sings, composes, and arranges in the band Flo and the Murmurs, in her project Drift Yarns and in the vocal ensemble Hum, Buzz and Coo. Based between Biel and Bern, she works for several cultural institutions next to her musical projects.
Before turning to music professionally, Marie-Flo studied and worked in the field of sociology and migration where she explored the relationship between narration and identity. This spurred her captivation with storytelling and revealed the importance of deep listening, be it applied to people, communities, environment, or music.
