Luciana Morelli is an Argentinian singer,
composer and performer based in Basel,
Switzerland. With influences ranging from
Argentinian music, jazz, folk and improvised
music, Morelli’s imaginative arrangements see
her expressive voice guide the listener through
carefully curated worlds of raw instrumental
and vocal textures, shaping a distinctive sound
world marked by subtle timbral exploration,
strong narrative depth and an unmistakable
artistic voice.
In 2021 she released Lo abismal, el agua
(ears&eyes records), a deeply autobiographical
work reflecting her migration journey from Argentina to Switzerland through original
compositions. Throughout the album, lyrics intertwine with wordless vocals and finely
crafted arrangements, building a bridge between her Argentinian roots and jazz. The
record received international reviews and radio airplay across Europe and the Americas
and was presented on tour in Argentina, Switzerland, Germany and France, including the
Festival Jazz à la Cité in Paris. Lucid Culture (USA) described it as “astonishingly melodic,
brilliant and picturesque music,” highlighting her ability to expand musical ideas with
freedom and risk, while New York Daily wrote that she “writes poetic, tautly imaginative
jazz songs in Spanish and sings in a full, mature, expressive voice.”
Her latest album, Words of the Wind (Habitable Records, 2024), further explores the
meeting point between music and poetry. In this project, Morelli sets texts by Emily
Brontë, Alejandra Pizarnik, Anne Carson and Robin Myers to music, creating new sonic
dimensions through compositions and arrangements for diverse ensembles — from jazz
quintet to string quartet and vocal ensemble. Driven by a deeply curious creative spirit,
she experiments with contrasting compositional techniques in dialogue with these female
poetic voices, delving into themes of nature, love, death, loneliness, identity, madness,
desire, family and memory. The album was presented on an international tour across
Argentina, Uruguay, Germany, France and Switzerland. The tour included performances at
the prestigious Bird's Eye Jazz Club in Basel and at the JazzChur Festival in Switzerland.
International press has confirmed the strength and originality of her artistic vision. Jazz’
N’ More (Switzerland) praised her work, stating: “Her voice is extremely expressive…
There is always something new to discover.”
