Lucy Walsh is a Scottish flautist studying for her MA (Classical Music Performance) at the Hoschule der Künste Bern (HKB), with professors Adam Walker and Anja Clift. She recently completed undergraduate studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London, UK), where she was a 'Tobacco Pipe Makers' scholar, and received a 1:1 mark alongside a Concert Recital Diploma.

Lucy is strongly influenced by her upbringing on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, creatively channelling the sounds of her childhood immersed in traditional music, and time spent in nature. Lucy recently played a recital at the inaugural Arran International Festival of Chamber Music and Song with harpist Chris Clarke, which saw the commission of a world premiere by renowned composer Electra Perivolaris.

Lucy's time in London facilitated exploration into contemporary flute technique and improvisation/composition, which led to a variety of projects and concerts, including performances with Treephonia, the Listening Project, and Rothko Collective, winning the prestigious non-classical’s ‘Battle of the Bands’ curated by Gabriel Prokofiev. She is a founding member of the Iorsa Collective, which aims to increase accessibility of classical music by integrating it through cross-arts collaborations (iorsacollective.com). Last July, Lucy appeared with ‘GSMD Experimental Music Workshop’ for a performance of Tim Parkinson’s ‘Septet 2004’ at the church of St-Mary-at-Hill, which is awaiting broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s ‘New Music Show’. Most recently, Lucy is enjoying experimenting with experimenting with electronic music production to further her creative output.

In Feb 2023, Lucy led the flute section in the GSMD production of Jake Heggie’s ‘Dead Man Walking’, and in November, she played principal position in Guildhall Symphony Orchestra for Zemlinsky’s ‘The Mermaid’, conducted by Antony Hermus in Barbican Hall. In 2023, Lucy recently attended Berlin Opera Academy in Germany their August session, performing productions of Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Lucy has also reached the final of the GSMD Flute Competition twice, in 2023/24.

Lucy has valued a wide range of learning opportunities – highlights include masterclasses/lessons from Wissam Boustany, Lorna McGhee (Scottish International Flute Summer School), Alena Walentin, and Adam Walker. She was taught by Sarah Newbold, Ian Clarke, Philippa Davies and Christopher Green (piccolo) at GSMD.
