Winner of Montreux Jazz Talent Award 2019, Afra Kane is a pianist, singer and song-writer, boasting a great variety of musical and cultural backgrounds, resulting in different influences from Classical, Jazz, Motown and Afro-gospel music. Her music is a beautiful blend of Jazz nuances, inscribed into classical influences, balanced by a soulful and powerful voice- expresses melancholy, faith and depth.
Her first EP "Scorpio", released in January 2019 and self-produced in collaboration with Christophe Farine, received a good media exposition on the Swiss radios. Afra Kane has been invited to play at the Swiss Institute of Rome, as well as participating in Jack Savoretti’s Italian tour as a guest-opening act. In Switzerland, she has performed in venues such as the Bee-flat, in Bern, Festi’neuch and the Montreux Jazz Talent Award 2019, of which she is the winner for Best Solo award. She also went on her first overseas tour in the United States last autumn.
Born in Italy from a Nigerian background, she was encouraged by her mother to take piano lessons in order to accompany the worship service at her church. Soon, she was introduced into an education in classical piano and was admitted in various Conservatoires around Europe, finally obtaining a Bachelor of performing arts in piano performance at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Genève, Switzerland. During this time, she attended numerous masterclasses with renowned pianists and took part in a few collaborations with chamber ensembles and orchestras as a soloist, performing piano concertos by W.A. Mozart, C. Saint-Saëns and G.Gershwin.
